DESCRIPTION:A weekly practice group focusing on the meditative benefits of drawing and mixed media arts. \nStudies in the Creative Arts Therapies have shown that drawing\, especially when incorporated as part of a regular meditative practice\, can help promote relaxation\, mindful presence\, beneficial “flow” states\, and a sense of well being. \nIn this weekly practice group\, we will learn and share a variety of drawing techniques that are especially good for helping with creating a meditative state. Some areas we have explored\, but are not limited to\, included: \nNeurographic art\nTouch drawing\nBlind contour drawing\n“slow” drawing\nZentangle and Zen Doodling\ndrawing from still life\nReverse water color pages\nadding shading and color to pen and ink drawings \nSessions are facilitated by an experienced artist\, and all necessary tools and materials are provided. You are welcome to bring your own favorite materials as desired. No prior experience is necessary for Mindful Drawing sessions\, just your sense of curiosity and creativity!

DESCRIPTION:West Lane Emergency Communications Network is a local neighborhood radio network that conducts a monthly radio check-in on the first Monday of each month at 1:00 pm PST. During an emergency where our normal communications services are compromised or eliminated\, this radio network would enable neighbors to communicate with each other\, other neighborhoods\, and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) wherever it may be located. The radio check-in is conducted on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) channel 22\, utilising our repeater on Herman Peak north of Florence. DESCRIPTION:Lane County Extension and Siuslaw Public Library Partner to Offer Free Pressure Canner Gauge Testing\nFLORENCE\, Ore. – The Oregon State University Extension Service – Lane County is partnering with the Siuslaw Public Library to offer a free Pressure Canner Gauge Testing Event on Thursday\, August 6\, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Bromley Room at the Siuslaw Public Library. Home canners are invited to drop in during event hours and have their pressure canner gauges tested at no cost by certified OSU Master Food Preservers. Participants should bring the lid from their pressure canner with the dial gauge attached. \nPressure canning is the only safe method for preserving low-acid foods such as vegetables\, meats\, seafood\, and soups. An accurate pressure gauge is essential to ensure foods reach the temperatures necessary to destroy harmful bacteria during processing. \nOver time\, pressure canner gauges can become inaccurate through normal use. Because even a small variation in pressure can affect food safety\, the USDA and Oregon State University Extension recommend having dial gauges tested at least once each year. This free community service helps home canners preserve food with confidence while ensuring their equipment is operating accurately. \nCertified OSU Master Food Preservers will be available throughout the event to test gauges\, answer basic pressure canning questions\, and provide guidance on maintaining safe home food preservation practices. SUMMARY:Native Plant Walk: An Introduction to Gardening with Common Local Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 8\, 2026\n10:00 AM – 12:00 PM \nHolman Vista Day Use Area (at the end of Sutton Beach Rd.\, north of Florence)\n\nThis workshop will provide a basic introduction to identifying some common native plants of the coastal region and tips on growing them in gardens and landscapes. Participants will also learn about several ornamental invasive species that are best avoided. Designed for beginners\, this workshop is for anyone who is new to learning about the world of native plants in the coastal region. \nThe workshop will be broken into two parts. The first hour will be spent observing and discussing plants in the vicinity of the Holman Vista Day Use parking lot. This portion will involve minimal walking but will include walking in loose sand. The second hour will consist of a one-mile roundtrip hike along a trail through shore pine forest with a well-developed shrub understory\, ending in a small meadow beside Sutton Creek where several invasive species can be observed and discussed. Participants may choose to attend only the first portion of the workshop if they are not comfortable joining the hike. Due to the walking conditions and trail terrain\, this workshop may not be suitable for individuals with limited mobility. \nHolman Vista Day Use Area is a US Forest Service fee parking area. Participants will need to have a USFS Forest Pass\, or purchase a digital day pass using a QR code on site. If you need to purchase a parking pass\, please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to go through the process. The day use parking fee is five dollars. Please do not bring pets to the workshop. \nThe workshop will be presented by Rob Cuthrell\, Ph.D.\, a historical ecologist and restoration ecology practitioner with over a decade of experience working with plants on the Pacific Coast. \n\nTo register\, please complete the form linked here.

DESCRIPTION:A weekly practice group focusing on the meditative benefits of drawing and mixed media arts. \nStudies in the Creative Arts Therapies have shown that drawing\, especially when incorporated as part of a regular meditative practice\, can help promote relaxation\, mindful presence\, beneficial “flow” states\, and a sense of well being. \nIn this weekly practice group\, we will learn and share a variety of drawing techniques that are especially good for helping with creating a meditative state. Some areas we have explored\, but are not limited to\, included: \nNeurographic art\nTouch drawing\nBlind contour drawing\n“slow” drawing\nZentangle and Zen Doodling\ndrawing from still life\nReverse water color pages\nadding shading and color to pen and ink drawings \nSessions are facilitated by an experienced artist\, and all necessary tools and materials are provided. You are welcome to bring your own favorite materials as desired. No prior experience is necessary for Mindful Drawing sessions\, just your sense of curiosity and creativity!

There will be\nreferences to why people should care about food waste and what they can do locally to prevent it.
