DESCRIPTION:Please join Florence Organizes\, [City Lights Cinema and the Baha’i Community] for a Martin Luther King Weekend-long Celebration on January 17th and 18th to honor MLKs legacy of building unity and peace. \n  \nBefore the  MLK Celebration Parade on Saturday\, January 17th\, there will be a gathering for a brief rally at 1st and Nopal St. A Cocoa Brigade (sponsored by Dunes City Indivisible) will be on hand\, and Lovejoys is offering $3.00 coffee specialty drinks to keep us warm. Mayor Ward will read a Martin Luther King proclamation and Representative Val Hoyle will join our festivities. \n  \nThe rally will be followed by a joyful parade with music from Siuslaw Songrise Stringband\, vintage cars\, local dignitaries and various community organizations. The route starts at 1st and Nopal\, then proceeds down Bay St to Veterans Park. Please come to watch or march along! This is a family-friendly event\, with flags and kazoos for all. Well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome\, too. There is no room for messages of hate in MLK’s vision. If you bring a sign\, make sure it is in keeping with King’s vision of unity\, justice\, equity\, love and peace. \n  \nOn Sunday\, January 18th\, City Lights Theater and our Baha’i community co-sponsor will host a tribute to Martin Luther King at noon. There will be two inspirational speakers\, Russ Pierson\, Dean of LCC Florence and Jayden Ruff\, Chair of South Coast Health Equity Coalition. Then we have a chance to sing uplifting songs with Mark Levy before watching Selma. This is a 2014 historical drama chronicling Dr. King’s 1965 voting rights campaign in Selma\, Alabama\, focusing on the struggle for Black Suffrage\, the historic marches to Montgomery\, and the eventual signing of the Voting Rights Act. Admission is free. The theater is offering a small drink and popcorn for $5. Tickets can be picked up (at City Lights]  or purchased online ($1) after January 10th. \n  \n[MLK Jr. Day of Service is Monday\, January 19th] \n  \nThis is a time to recommit our community to Dr. King’s dream– a dream bigger than him\, bigger than us. SUMMARY:Environmental Management Advisory Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Sustaining and improving the City’s livability and quality of life is Goal 2 of the City of Florence work plan. The Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) realizes Goal 2 by developing local strategies and advising the City Council on protecting Florence’s health and environment and conserving energy and natural resources. They are responsible for insuring compliance with the City’s solid waste code (FCC 9-4)\, and DEQ’s recycling education rules (OAR 340-090-0030 & 0040) and they serve as the City’s Tree Board.  \nEMAC consists of 5 to 11 members\, of which the majority must be residents of the City and includes additional ex-officio non-voting members. Members serve for a term of four years with a term expiration on May 31st.  \nEMAC Meetings are generally held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 3:00 p.m. For the latest schedule\, visit the City’s calendar page.\nHERE \nQuestions about the committee\, waste reduction or recycling in Florence? DESCRIPTION:Yes\, there is such a thing as a free lunch.  The Florence Methodist church has been providing a free lunch to anyone who wishes to come every Tuesday and Thursday for over 30 years.  Come enjoy a fresh-cooked meal in our dining room.  Lunch is served from 11:30 to 12:30 every Tuesday and Thursday.  We are located at 333 Kingwood St. in the Florence United Methodist Church (the yellow church).  Everyone is invited.  Come and bring a friend. \n(Note:  Lunch is served 11:30-12:30. DESCRIPTION:PFLAG to show award-winning documentary\nPFLAG Florence invites the public to view “Heightened Scrutiny\,” a Sundance award-winning documentary on January 12\, at 6 p.m. at Florence United Methodist Church. The film follows an American Civil Liberties Union attorney as he represents trans youth\, their families and a doctor who filed suit against the Tennessee law that prohibits certain medical care for minors – chiefly puberty blockers and hormone therapy – arguing that the restrictions are discriminatory on the basis of sex and transgender status. The attorney became the first openly trans person to argue in front of the Supreme Court during oral arguments last December in U.S. v. Skrmetti. The film’s director is Sam Feder\, whose award-winning documentary “Disclosure\,” which evaluated how trans people are depicted in film and television\, was shown by PFLAG Florence in 2022.\nThe event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available.\nPFLAG Florence is one of more than 400 chapters in the largest national organization serving the LGBTQ+ community and those who love them.
