SUMMARY:25th Annual Pounding for Florence Food Share
DESCRIPTION:The 25th annual “Pounding” to benefit Florence Food Share will be held at Grocery Outlet on Saturday\, November 22\, from 10 am to 2 pm.  Founded and hosted by local businesswoman Cindy Wobbe\, this annual food drive aims to fill the food bank’s pantries with much-needed canned\, boxed\, and frozen food items in time for the holiday season.  The event will be conducted as a drive-through donation drop directly in front of the store.  \nStarted in 2000 and held on the Saturday just before Thanksgiving\, the Pounding is modeled after the early tradition often practiced in small communities when a new family or preacher would move to town.  “To help folks get their feet firmly planted\, everyone would join together and contribute a pound of food to fill the pantry.  Someone would bring a pound of flour\, another a pound of sugar\, and somebody else a pound of beans.  When everybody chips in\, we can fill those shelves pretty quickly\,” said Wobbe.   “Nearly 800 families in our community are food insecure and rely on Food Share each month for assistance.  The current housing crisis and economic challenges place extraordinary stress on both Food Share and the families it serves.  That need is not going to go away.  This food drive has been a godsend year after year.”  To date\, this event has raised over 235\,000 pounds of food. \nWobbe will be joined by local radio personalities from KCST Coast Radio\, which has conducted a live radio remote on location every year since the beginning.  Purchasing food from Grocery Outlet is not required; food from any commercially packed source will be accepted.  However\, Florence Grocery Outlet marks specials throughout the store of items most desperately needed at the food bank and plans to have extra staff available during the event to help with pushing grocery carts\, loading boxes of canned foods\, and ringing in customers at the check stands.\nGrocery Outlet is located at 2066 Hwy. 101.  The Pounding will begin at 10 am on Saturday\, November 22\, and continue until 2 pm.

DESCRIPTION:West Lane Emergency Communications Network is a local neighborhood radio network that conducts a monthly radio check-in on the first Monday of each month at 1:00 pm PST. During an emergency where our normal communications services are compromised or eliminated\, this radio network would enable neighbors to communicate with each other\, other neighborhoods\, and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) wherever it may be located. The radio check-in is conducted on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) channel 22\, utilising our repeater on Herman Peak north of Florence. SUMMARY:18th Annual Nativity Festival in Florence
DESCRIPTION:The Florence Nativity Festival committee recently met to begin preparation for its 18th annual nativity exhibit.  Keeping consistent with the last few years\, this year’s event will be held for 3 days and include live music and homemade cookies.  The festival will run from Friday\, December 5th through Sunday December 7th from 1-5pm each day. It will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located on the corner of North Fork and Munsel Lake Roads in Florence. \nThe event is free.\nFrom a modest beginning in 2006 with 119 nativities on display\, the festival has grown to include almost 400 representing many countries\, media and cultures – all from local community members.   Anyone in the area who desires to display a nativity is invited to participate in the festival. If you have a cherished heirloom or a papier-mache scene made by your first grader\, all nativities\, large or small are welcome.  \nSecurity is provided for the scenes once they are set up at the church For information about sharing your display\, please contact Vickie Kennedy at 541 991-7397 or email vdkennedy54@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:The Empty Bowls 2025 Committee proudly announces the featured artwork for this year’s event. Karylynn Keppol has generously offered her artwork entitled “Bowl Frog\,” to the Empty Bowls 2025 Fundraiser for use in publicity and as a donation to the Empty Bowls Fundraiser.\nKarylynn Keppol is an artist from Florence Oregon\, currently living in Seattle. She primarily works in acrylics and digital drawing\, creating colorful paintings of mythical characters and landscapes inspired by the Pacific Northwest. Kary has been showing in galleries and shops along the Oregon Coast for the past ten years. This year she has focused on quarterly collections of smaller original works\, and her debut picture book\, YogaGirl\, was published in August of 2025. You can find more about Kary and her work on her website\, KaryKeppol.com.\nThe featured art piece will be raffled off at the Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the Empty Bowls event\, with the drawing taking place Sunday afternoon. The winner need not be present to win.\nWe hope you can join us at the 29th Empty Bowls Fundraiser at the Florence Events Center. The Empty Bowls Fundraiser will occur on December 5th\, 6th\, and 7th. It’s free admission\, family-friendly\, and lots of fun! PFLAG invites you to meet its new president and board to hear about exciting initiatives for outreach\, including a possible Coastal Pride Summit involving LGBTQ+ groups from Coos Bay to Newport for an event to be hosted in Florence in October 2026.  \nIdeas are important to PFLAG’s continued local mission. It’s important to hear from as many friends\, allies and LGBTQ+ people in the community to best serve the region. If you’re interested in serving as secretary starting in January\, come to the meeting and put your name in nomination.
