SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Weekend Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Please join Florence Organizes\, [City Lights Cinema and the Baha’i Community] for a Martin Luther King Weekend-long Celebration on January 17th and 18th to honor MLKs legacy of building unity and peace. \n  \nBefore the  MLK Celebration Parade on Saturday\, January 17th\, there will be a gathering for a brief rally at 1st and Nopal St. A Cocoa Brigade (sponsored by Dunes City Indivisible) will be on hand\, and Lovejoys is offering $3.00 coffee specialty drinks to keep us warm. Mayor Ward will read a Martin Luther King proclamation and Representative Val Hoyle will join our festivities. \n  \nThe rally will be followed by a joyful parade with music from Siuslaw Songrise Stringband\, vintage cars\, local dignitaries and various community organizations. The route starts at 1st and Nopal\, then proceeds down Bay St to Veterans Park. Please come to watch or march along! This is a family-friendly event\, with flags and kazoos for all. Well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome\, too. There is no room for messages of hate in MLK’s vision. If you bring a sign\, make sure it is in keeping with King’s vision of unity\, justice\, equity\, love and peace. \n  \nOn Sunday\, January 18th\, City Lights Theater and our Baha’i community co-sponsor will host a tribute to Martin Luther King at noon. There will be two inspirational speakers\, Russ Pierson\, Dean of LCC Florence and Jayden Ruff\, Chair of South Coast Health Equity Coalition. Then we have a chance to sing uplifting songs with Mark Levy before watching Selma. This is a 2014 historical drama chronicling Dr. King’s 1965 voting rights campaign in Selma\, Alabama\, focusing on the struggle for Black Suffrage\, the historic marches to Montgomery\, and the eventual signing of the Voting Rights Act. Admission is free. The theater is offering a small drink and popcorn for $5. Tickets can be picked up (at City Lights]  or purchased online ($1) after January 10th. \n  \n[MLK Jr. Day of Service is Monday\, January 19th] \n  \nThis is a time to recommit our community to Dr. King’s dream– a dream bigger than him\, bigger than us. His dream belongs to all of us. Come help us celebrate a community collective vision of dignity and belonging.

FACC aims to provide our Western Lane communities with relevant\, useful demographic information. \n1 – 4 pm in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library\, FACC and Lane County Public Health will host a Data Party to present and discuss the data underlying the new Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). \nThis is a major step in a collaborative project to build a Western Lane demographic database that describes our communities\, that helps us understand our problems\, and that aids us in creating solutions.  \nAmong other things\, we wish to provide a public and accessible source of information for those who seek grants and funding. Your participation can help make this a reality! \nThe CHIP data and plan documents are hosted by Live Healthy Lane on their website\, and you are encouraged to download and explore the information before the Data Party. \n \nLive Healthy Lane is a community-based effort to improve the health and well-being of those who live\, learn\, work\, and play in Lane County. \nCreating the conditions for optimal health is the responsibility of everyone in our community. The community work includes the periodic assessment of health issues and needs in Lane County (the Community Health Assessment; CHA) and the development and implementation of the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP).

DESCRIPTION:This is a monthly gathering for our Studio creative community to appreciate\, practice\, and explore approaches/techniques in meditative drawing such as Zentangling\, drawing from observation\, “slow” drawing\, Neurographic arts\, and more. Each session\, we will practice our drawing skills together in a supportive and relaxed environment. Also open to members of the public; beginners welcome! \nLed by a creative arts professional\, at each session\, we will explore a new design\, drawing technique or meditative drawing style. Each assignment will be guaranteed to help you get in the “flow”\, and will help you build new perspectives and skills. If you like\, you can also use the time to work on a meditative drawing project of your own\, share with the group\, trade tips and tricks\, and get technical guidance and support from one another and the group leader. \nYou’re welcome to bring your own drawing supplies and reference material to practice with; We will have extra tools and materials on hand as needed. \nDrawing supplies may also be purchased in advance from Beaux Arts art supply store in Florence\, located just off Hwy. 101 in the Coastal Fitness shopping plaza. \nYou may pre-register for this event\, or pay at the desk at time of session. DESCRIPTION:Every day there are activities in our lives that we need to or want to do – making a meal\, taking a shower\, balancing our checkbook\, playing a musical instrument\, working in the garden. With Parkinson’s\, sometimes one’s ability to do these actives confidently and safely can be affected. When this happens\, working with an Occupational Therapist (OT) can by extremely beneficial! \nJoin Molly Schroder\, OT\, for an interactive and engaging discussion about what OTs do\, how they help their clients\, and explore the many adaptive ‘gizmos and gadgets’ they use to help people achieve their goals. You will discover that there is much more to working with an OT than just the activities of daily living! Molly will also explain how to set specific\, achievable\, goals and what to expect when working with an Occupational Therapist. Attendees will have the opportunity to try some devices and have an open conversation with Molly about the tools that could work for them.

Enjoy viewing some live artmaking as well as our usual community potluck and open patio out back.  \nKick back and mingle at our First Friday After Hours—A great way to learn about the Studio and connect with creative healing community. \nYou can look forward to displays of live painting from local and regional artists\, updates on what’s new with our Gallery\, classes and upcoming activities\, fun and danceable music\, an intimate and welcoming space for movement\, connecting and fun\, and of course our community potluck.  \nYou can also expect an open easel or two for you to join in the art making fun\, and the occasional special showcase or performance in a variety of wellness and expressive arts media.  \nAll ages hour between 5 to 6pm – BYOB afterwards. We will have coffee\, tea and water available in addition to refreshments. On May 1 we be celebrating May Day with a community BBQ.
