SUMMARY:Environmental Management Advisory Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Sustaining and improving the City’s livability and quality of life is Goal 2 of the City of Florence work plan. The Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) realizes Goal 2 by developing local strategies and advising the City Council on protecting Florence’s health and environment and conserving energy and natural resources. They are responsible for insuring compliance with the City’s solid waste code (FCC 9-4)\, and DEQ’s recycling education rules (OAR 340-090-0030 & 0040) and they serve as the City’s Tree Board.  \nEMAC consists of 5 to 11 members\, of which the majority must be residents of the City and includes additional ex-officio non-voting members. Members serve for a term of four years with a term expiration on May 31st.  \nEMAC Meetings are generally held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 3:00 p.m. For the latest schedule\, visit the City’s calendar page.\nHERE \nQuestions about the committee\, waste reduction or recycling in Florence? DESCRIPTION:Getting Loud at the Library \nOnce upon a time\, you may have heard a fairytale: that libraries are quiet places where everyone\, including the staff\, spend their days silently reading. But that was always just a story. As spaces where anyone can walk through the door to find a book and pursue an education\, develop early literacy skills\, log onto a computer\, meet with their neighbors\, or just sit and be\, public libraries in America have always been revolutionary\, and seldom quiet. On October 9\, Siuslaw Public Library Director Meg Spencer will get loud at the City Club of Florence about how the library is helping local residents come together to read and learn. You’ll also learn how that work may be impacted by reduced funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the State Library of Oregon. This will also be an opportunity to discuss the freedom to read\, and why American democracy\, and public libraries\, are unique in protecting the rights of citizens to make their own choices about what they access at their local library.   \nThis program is sponsored by the City Club of Florence\, which is neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Siuslaw Public Library District.

Where should you evacuate during a nearby forest fire? How do you prepare for an unexpected emergency at your home? How would you help a loved one with a serious injury? What type of emergency materials do you need in case of evacuation?  \nGet your questions answered from a host of professionals in the all-day booth area\, with experts in the field helping you prepare to face a crisis with confidence. Special seminars include “Texas 4th of July Flash Floods – Lessons Learned for the Oregon Coast”\, Stop the Bleed course\, and Water Purification course throughout the day.  \nSpeak directly with the emergency personnel who will be helping you through a Siuslaw emergency\, with organizations including the City of Florence\, the U.S. Coast Guard\, Oregon Office of Resilience Emergency Management. \nDo you have a food plan during a disaster? Join a variety of expert homecooks throughout the region as they cook a variety of meals in an all-day “disaster cooking” demonstration. From cooking without heat and water to using portable stoves\, the chefs will focus on non-perishable ingredients in their culinary creations.  \nAnd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, enjoy a free hot dog lunch provided by the Rotary Club of Florence\, while supplies last.\n“Beat the Wave” is sponsored by the City of Florence and Three Rivers Casino to connect residents on the Oregon Coast with businesses and emergency service providers to raise awareness about disaster preparedness.

People are invited to visit the Florence Events Center\, 715 Quince St.\, from 11 am to 2 pm\, to learn about walking opportunities in Florence. \nThen\, members of the Florence committees will lead guided tours of the Siuslaw Estuary Trail and Florence public art at 11:15 am\, 12:15 pm\, and 1:15 pm.
