Starting this month\, we’re also opening the stage up to storytelling\, song and musical performances! \nOpen members of the public; this is a gathering of adults discussing personally relevant themes\, but we don’t have an age restriction. There may be the occasional PG-13 content shared. \nPlease check out our selection of poetry books for sale in the Gallery while you’re here\, and connect with our poets to learn about additional events and offerings.  \nRSVP to let us know you’re coming! SUMMARY:2025 Community Christmas Basket Project
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 51st Annual Christmas Food Basket Project!\nSoroptimist International of Florence and our volunteers will be handing out Christmas Food Baskets at Siuslaw Middle School on Saturday\, December 20th from 10am to 1pm.\nNo registration is required to receive a Christmas Food Basket. Just come on down when we are distributing.\nAll cars must line up on 27th Street between Kingwood and Oak Street and will be directed on how to enter the pick up line.\nThe Christmas Food Basket Project is coordinated by Soroptimist International of Florence. At last year’s event\, Soroptimist members\, along with our over 100 volunteers\, handed out about $40\,000 worth of food and holiday cheer to 459 families representing over 2\,200 people.\nInterested in helping to fund the Christmas Food Basket Project? Walk with us as we “carry the light” through the longest night of the year\, celebrating the return of the Sun. \nNOTE: We meet outside Bridgeport Market starting at 4:45\, with the walk kicking off at 5:00pm.  \nExpect to take around 20-40 minutes at a leisurely pace. Wheelchair accessible. Event will be held rain or shine\, so make sure to dress for the weather. This is an all ages event\, and everyone is welcome to join. Lanterns\, light up toys\, costumery\, Jingle bells\, and merriment encouraged! \nWe’ll meander along the Boardwalk and through Old Town\, and experience the annual light displays\, with magical discoveries and photo opportunities along the way.  \nWe will return to the Studio afterwards for warming up\, cocoa\, and Solstice themed music and singalongs with special guests\, Red Cedar Rhythm!

DESCRIPTION:Curt Peters is pleased to announce his photo show at Siuslaw Public Library.  This show consists of 35 unreleased images from Curt’s journeys to Costa Rica. \nCurt has been traveling to and photographing the vibrant heart of Costa Rica’s rainforests for over 30 years.  He loves spending hours in the humidity\, waiting motionless amid sudden rains and insect swarms with some of his photographic treasures which include: fiery red-crowned woodpeckers\, soaring white-fronted parrots\, blazing summer tanagers\, cobalt land crabs\, curious white-faced capuchins\, golden-mantled howlers\, rainbow scarlet macaws\, crested plumed basilisks\, jewel-like hummingbirds\, velvet gartered trogons\, emerald great green macaws\, cascading pagoda flowers and lobster-claw heliconias\, massive-billed chestnut-mandibled toucans\, scarlet-gazed red-eyed treefrogs\, jade-tailed resplendent quetzals\, slow-dreaming brown-throated sloths and a spectacled owl.  These images capture the rainforest’s explosive colors\, intoxicating smells\, and untamed sounds-a living tapestry of wonder. \nCurt Peters is an award-winning photographer and master printer based in Florence\, Oregon. With over 50 years of experience in photography\, he has dedicated his career to capturing the beauty of landscapes\, wildlife\, and human moments while mastering the art of digital imaging and fine art printing. \nCurt’s journey began in his youth\, sparked by early experiments with cameras that quickly evolved into a lifelong passion. After brief studies at Oregon State University\, he transferred to the University of Arizona in Tucson\, honing his skills amid diverse environments. Post-college\, he pointed his lens at the landscapes of 27 countries\, from the Caribbean to Alaska\, building a vast portfolio of hundreds of thousands of images.  Upon settling down in Florence in 2006\, he founded “Digital Dunes Photography”.  Digital Dunes Photography offers a full spectrum of services: wedding\, portrait\, senior\, family\, event\, and product photography\, alongside expert photo restorations\, custom fine art printing\, and reproductions. \nWhile the commercial work at Digital Dunes Photography sustains the studio\, Curt’s true passion lies in fine art landscape and wildlife photography where he has showcased dramatic coastal lighthouses\, Thor’s Well\, the Siuslaw River Bridge\, to name a few locally  A full scope of his images can be found on his “Curtis Peters Photography” website\, curtpeters.com.  Curt says\,” I strive for perfection in every stage from ethical wild shooting\, meticulous post-processing in Adobe Lightroom Classic to preserve natural tones and details\, and obsessive calibration for prints that breath life into the scene.” \nThis show will be on display from January 2 through the end of the month in the lobby of the Siuslaw Public Library located at 1460 9th Street in Florence.

It will be a gift to have you. \n\nTwo Wednesdays\, December 17\, 2025 & January 7\, 2026 1:00-2:30 PM\nNew Life Lutheran Church—2100 Spruce St. Florence\, OR\n\nWhat will Class be like?\nThe Christmas Story in the Gospel of Matthew is found in Matthew’s first two chapters. Chapter 1 is a genealogy\, but it’s a really interesting one!! Chapter 1 also tells about the birth of Jesus. Chapter 2 is about the Wisemen and King Herod. (This is where things really get dicey!) \nIn the first class on Wednesday\, December 17 we will: \n\nIntroduce ourselves.\nTalk about the Online Quiz some of us took. (As in “the answers” and “what did people say?”)\nWe’ll look at Matthew’s unique genealogy. (What the heck is he doing here\, and why?!)\nThen\, we’ll focus in on Matthew 1:18-25. As time allows we will discuss how Matthew’s Christmas Story is different than what we read in the Gospel of Luke – and why.\n\nSomewhere in the midst of all this we’ll take a break.\nFeel free to bring you own Bible if you wish. We will also have Bible available.\nThere will also be handouts\, PPT slides to see\, etc.\n\n\n\nIn the second class on Wednesday\, January 7 we will: \n\nRe-introduce ourselves as needed.\nReview the first session\, what we learned\, and what we’ve been thinking about over Christmas\, etc.\nThen we’ll launch into Matthew chapter 2!\n\nWho were the Wisemen?\nWhat was King Herod’s problem?!\nKing Herod\, the Wisemen\, and Mary\, Joseph & Jesus – all had critical decisions to make. What can we learn from them?\nAnd ‘wrap up’ – of course!\n\n\n\nThere will be “lecture/presentation” components to the class\, but plenty of time will be given for discussion\, questions and everybody’s thoughts. Please remember to bring your ID card to be served alcohol.  \nThink back to your childhood\, and the excitement of painting and drawing as a way of learning how to use materials\, and discovering all the things you could do with them. Wouldn’t it feel great to have that freedom and enjoyment back again? You can\, with our Process Paint and Sip night!  \n“Process  painting” and its cousin\, Intuitive Painting\, use a style of expressive art that focuses on the experience of using color\, form\, composition\, and the properties of  paint and mixed media to build layers on a surface\, without having a pre-exising idea or attachment to what the end product looks like. We create using a few basic principles that leave room for the spontaneous and the playful to emerge.  \n Focusing on process\,  rather than the finished piece\, frees us up to explore and  experiment\, learn and practice the principles of visual art media\, and build our own repetoire of creative skills and approaches – all without being afraid of making a mistake\, or comparing  ourselves to others. Many folks also find this method of painting helps them feel more comfortable and relaxed in the present moment\, not to mention energized and delighted!  \nDuring the evening\, we will: \n~ Gather  for social time & enjoy your choice of beverages \n~ Learn how process- focused painting works\, and do some basic warm-up exercises\, \n~ Enjoy music and free painting time\, with guidance from an experienced fine artist\, \n~ Learn how to talk about our creative experiences\, what we  learned\, and what we appreciate about one another’s work in a way that’s supportive and encouraging.  \nParticipants will go home with one or more finished pieces\, and the knowledge of how to continue a process/intuitive painting practice on their own. DESCRIPTION:PFLAG to show award-winning documentary\nPFLAG Florence invites the public to view “Heightened Scrutiny\,” a Sundance award-winning documentary on January 12\, at 6 p.m. at Florence United Methodist Church. The film follows an American Civil Liberties Union attorney as he represents trans youth\, their families and a doctor who filed suit against the Tennessee law that prohibits certain medical care for minors – chiefly puberty blockers and hormone therapy – arguing that the restrictions are discriminatory on the basis of sex and transgender status. The attorney became the first openly trans person to argue in front of the Supreme Court during oral arguments last December in U.S. v. Skrmetti. The film’s director is Sam Feder\, whose award-winning documentary “Disclosure\,” which evaluated how trans people are depicted in film and television\, was shown by PFLAG Florence in 2022.\nThe event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available.\nPFLAG Florence is one of more than 400 chapters in the largest national organization serving the LGBTQ+ community and those who love them.

DESCRIPTION:Sustaining and improving the City’s livability and quality of life is Goal 2 of the City of Florence work plan. The Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) realizes Goal 2 by developing local strategies and advising the City Council on protecting Florence’s health and environment and conserving energy and natural resources. They are responsible for insuring compliance with the City’s solid waste code (FCC 9-4)\, and DEQ’s recycling education rules (OAR 340-090-0030 & 0040) and they serve as the City’s Tree Board.  \nEMAC consists of 5 to 11 members\, of which the majority must be residents of the City and includes additional ex-officio non-voting members. DESCRIPTION:Please join Florence Organizes\, [City Lights Cinema and the Baha’i Community] for a Martin Luther King Weekend-long Celebration on January 17th and 18th to honor MLKs legacy of building unity and peace. \n  \nBefore the  MLK Celebration Parade on Saturday\, January 17th\, there will be a gathering for a brief rally at 1st and Nopal St. A Cocoa Brigade (sponsored by Dunes City Indivisible) will be on hand\, and Lovejoys is offering $3.00 coffee specialty drinks to keep us warm. Mayor Ward will read a Martin Luther King proclamation and Representative Val Hoyle will join our festivities. \n  \nThe rally will be followed by a joyful parade with music from Siuslaw Songrise Stringband\, vintage cars\, local dignitaries and various community organizations. The route starts at 1st and Nopal\, then proceeds down Bay St to Veterans Park. Please come to watch or march along! This is a family-friendly event\, with flags and kazoos for all. Well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome\, too. There is no room for messages of hate in MLK’s vision. If you bring a sign\, make sure it is in keeping with King’s vision of unity\, justice\, equity\, love and peace. \n  \nOn Sunday\, January 18th\, City Lights Theater and our Baha’i community co-sponsor will host a tribute to Martin Luther King at noon. There will be two inspirational speakers\, Russ Pierson\, Dean of LCC Florence and Jayden Ruff\, Chair of South Coast Health Equity Coalition. Then we have a chance to sing uplifting songs with Mark Levy before watching Selma. This is a 2014 historical drama chronicling Dr. King’s 1965 voting rights campaign in Selma\, Alabama\, focusing on the struggle for Black Suffrage\, the historic marches to Montgomery\, and the eventual signing of the Voting Rights Act. Admission is free. The theater is offering a small drink and popcorn for $5. Tickets can be picked up (at City Lights]  or purchased online ($1) after January 10th. \n  \n[MLK Jr. Day of Service is Monday\, January 19th] \n  \nThis is a time to recommit our community to Dr. King’s dream– a dream bigger than him\, bigger than us. His dream belongs to all of us. Come help us celebrate a community collective vision of dignity and belonging.
