DESCRIPTION:The City of Florence Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) will host\nthe third event in its Speaker Spotlight Series on Wednesday\, August 12\, 2026\, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at\nthe Siuslaw Public Library\, 1460 Ninth St. in Florence\, in the Bromley Room.\nJerin Dinkins\, Food System Specialist from the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)\, will be\npresenting on “Save Our Food: From Farm to Fork.”\nThis 60‑minute presentation starts with an overview of food systems and an interactive discussion about\nthe importance of sustainable production\, consumption\, and waste management practices. There will be\nreferences to why people should care about food waste and what they can do locally to prevent it. The\ndiscussion will conclude with updates on DEQ’s upcoming grant opportunities and ways to engage during\nFood Waste Prevention Week\, September 28 to October 4\, 2026.\nAttendees will enjoy snacks and refreshments\, have access to additional educational materials\, and\ncan participate in giveaways and raffle drawings. DESCRIPTION:Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative\, Lane County Parks\, McKenzie River Trust\, and Friends of Three Mile Prairie are co-hosting a volunteer event on Saturday\, August 29 from 10 AM to Noon at Three Mile Prairie County Park in Florence\, OR.  Volunteers are needed to protect the sand dune habitat and its native plants and animals by removing the invasive Scotch broom and small trees. \nThree Mile Prairie is located north of Florence Golf Links and west of Highway 101 at Fred Meyer. It is a 15-minute walk from the northwest corner of the Fred Meyer parking lot to the work site over some sand and fairly level ground. Bring closed-toe shoes\, work gloves\, water\, and snacks. Please bring shovels\, hand saws\, or loppers if you have them. If you don’t\, ODRC will have tools you can borrow. \nDirections: From the intersection of Highways 126 and 101 in Florence\, drive north 2.3 miles and turn west into the Fred Meyer parking lot at the Fred Meyer gas station. Drive past the gas pumps and go to the northwest corner of the parking lot towards the dunes in the back. Event leaders will meet you there. \nThe Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative works to collaboratively support\, guide and promote Oregon dunes restoration and the preservation of the open sand habitat that benefits the plants\, animals and people who live and play in this special place.
