DESCRIPTION:You are Invited!\nThis is Session 2 following Class Session 1 from December 17. You can review Session 1 here.  \nWe’re all learning\, laughing and thinking together. If you’d like to come\, you’re in! It will be a gift to have you. \n\nTwo Wednesdays\, December 17\, 2025 & January 7\, 2026 1:00-2:30 PM\nNew Life Lutheran Church—2100 Spruce St. Florence\, OR\n\nWhat will Class be like?\nThe Christmas Story in the Gospel of Matthew is found in Matthew’s first two chapters. Chapter 1 is a genealogy\, but it’s a really interesting one!! Chapter 1 also tells about the birth of Jesus. Chapter 2 is about the Wisemen and King Herod. (This is where things really get dicey!) \nIn the first class on Wednesday\, December 17 we will: \n\nIntroduce ourselves.\nTalk about the Online Quiz some of us took. (As in “the answers” and “what did people say?”)\nWe’ll look at Matthew’s unique genealogy. (What the heck is he doing here\, and why?!)\nThen\, we’ll focus in on Matthew 1:18-25. As time allows we will discuss how Matthew’s Christmas Story is different than what we read in the Gospel of Luke – and why.\n\nSomewhere in the midst of all this we’ll take a break.\nFeel free to bring you own Bible if you wish. We will also have Bible available.\nThere will also be handouts\, PPT slides to see\, etc.\n\n\n\nIn the second class on Wednesday\, January 7 we will: \n\nRe-introduce ourselves as needed.\nReview the first session\, what we learned\, and what we’ve been thinking about over Christmas\, etc.\nThen we’ll launch into Matthew chapter 2!\n\nWho were the Wisemen?\nWhat was King Herod’s problem?!\nKing Herod\, the Wisemen\, and Mary\, Joseph & Jesus – all had critical decisions to make. What can we learn from them?\nAnd ‘wrap up’ – of course!\n\n\n\nThere will be “lecture/presentation” components to the class\, but plenty of time will be given for discussion\, questions and everybody’s thoughts. We will go as fast or as slow as we all want to.

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Weekend Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Please join Florence Organizes\, [City Lights Cinema and the Baha’i Community] for a Martin Luther King Weekend-long Celebration on January 17th and 18th to honor MLKs legacy of building unity and peace. \n  \nBefore the  MLK Celebration Parade on Saturday\, January 17th\, there will be a gathering for a brief rally at 1st and Nopal St. A Cocoa Brigade (sponsored by Dunes City Indivisible) will be on hand\, and Lovejoys is offering $3.00 coffee specialty drinks to keep us warm. Mayor Ward will read a Martin Luther King proclamation and Representative Val Hoyle will join our festivities. \n  \nThe rally will be followed by a joyful parade with music from Siuslaw Songrise Stringband\, vintage cars\, local dignitaries and various community organizations. The route starts at 1st and Nopal\, then proceeds down Bay St to Veterans Park. Please come to watch or march along! This is a family-friendly event\, with flags and kazoos for all. Well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome\, too. There is no room for messages of hate in MLK’s vision. If you bring a sign\, make sure it is in keeping with King’s vision of unity\, justice\, equity\, love and peace. \n  \nOn Sunday\, January 18th\, City Lights Theater and our Baha’i community co-sponsor will host a tribute to Martin Luther King at noon. There will be two inspirational speakers\, Russ Pierson\, Dean of LCC Florence and Jayden Ruff\, Chair of South Coast Health Equity Coalition. Then we have a chance to sing uplifting songs with Mark Levy before watching Selma. This is a 2014 historical drama chronicling Dr. King’s 1965 voting rights campaign in Selma\, Alabama\, focusing on the struggle for Black Suffrage\, the historic marches to Montgomery\, and the eventual signing of the Voting Rights Act. Admission is free. The theater is offering a small drink and popcorn for $5. Tickets can be picked up (at City Lights]  or purchased online ($1) after January 10th. \n  \n[MLK Jr. Day of Service is Monday\, January 19th] \n  \nThis is a time to recommit our community to Dr. King’s dream– a dream bigger than him\, bigger than us. His dream belongs to all of us. Come help us celebrate a community collective vision of dignity and belonging.
