SUMMARY:The City of Florence EMAC Speaker Spotlight Series
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about how you can help save the insects with David Kollen from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation!\n“Insect Apocalypse: “Insect Apocalypse?: What is really happening\, why it matters\, and how you can be part of the solution” summary: \nIntroduction to the Xerces Society\nThe Importance of Invertebrates\nThe Evidence of Invertebrate Decline\nThreats to Invertebrates\nNature-based Climate Solutions \n“Insect Apocalypse” starts with an overview of invertebrates including their diversity and biomass\, and goes on to describe how this enables their tremendous contribution to our food webs. Other ecosystem services such as decomposition and pollination are also covered. The talk then goes on to look at various studies and data trends that provide evidence of invertebrate declines.\nWith invertebrate declines setting the stage\, the topic progresses to the many threats thought to underpin these declines. Finally\, we will look at nature-based climate solutions. These are solutions that support invertebrate biodiversity and at the same time serve to mitigate some of the harmful impacts of climate change. \nDave Kollen is a Xerces Society Ambassador and in that role is involved in educational and outreach work. In addition\, he is an OSU Extension certified Master Melittoligist\, Bee Steward\, and Oregon Naturalist. His involvement in community science includes the Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas\, the California Bumble Bee Atlas\, and the Oregon Bee Atlas. Dave also writes pollinator-focused articles for the Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs newsletter\, Mahonia.

SUMMARY:Two for One Day! Celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day 2026\, Florence\, Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Arbor Day and Earth Day with a community cleanup event in the City of Florence. The City’s Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) is inviting volunteers to help remove ivy\, scotch broom\, and other invasive plants from our walking trails\, roadways\, and parks or assist with trail cleanup activities. The event is scheduled for Saturday April 25th. \nInvasive plants are threatening the natural environment of our local coastal areas. These plants do not belong here and often spread aggressively\, crowding out native vegetation. The resulting loss of natives results in lower quality habitat for birds\, bees\, deer\, and other animals and ivy smothers our trees\, blocking light and competing for water and nutrients. What better way to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day than to be working outside and helping protect our natural areas? \nVolunteers will meet at the new Estuary Trail parking lot where we will form teams to work at different locations within or near the city. Depending on the worksite\, access may require navigating sloped areas\, gravel\, uneven surfaces\, and exposed tree roots. At least one worksite will be accessible to all. Safety information and information on best practices for removing ivy\, scotch broom\, and other invasives will be provided.

SUMMARY:City of Florence Community Development BLACK & WHITE RECYCLING EVENT AND COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DAY!
DESCRIPTION:Summer is almost over which means it is a great time to do a community household clean up!\nWant to dispose of propane tanks\, mattresses\, tires\, block foam\, household goods\, eye wear\, hearing aids\, unopened food\, or leftover paint and building materials? And\, you don’t want to run all over town? The City of Florence Environmental Management Advisory Committee has organized a “one stop” drop event. \nSave the date of Saturday\, August 16th from 10 am until 2 pm\, and drop off your items at the Siuslaw Middle School south parking lot with entrances on 27th and Oak Streets. Volunteers and staff are available to help you unload your vehicles and trailers. \nThe main happening is the city’s annual Black and White Recycling Event\, so named because it enables city residents to get rid of unwanted black tires\, white propane tanks and historically white appliances FREE of charge. County Transfer & Recycling will be loading and transporting these items with size and quantity limitations as follows: propane and helium tanks 5 gallons or smaller; freon appliances—like refrigerators\, air conditioners\, and water coolers\, and passenger automobile tires that have 19.5″ rims or smaller limited to 5 per household. Disposal of Black and White items are limited to city residents\, but after 1pm disposal will open up to the greater Florence area residents if funding is still available using the generous donations of Les Schwab and St. Vinnies. \nThis year\, other organizations listed below are joining the event to provide additional FREE disposal opportunities. Here is what they are accepting:\n•St. Vinnies: mattresses\, block Styrofoam and household items for reuse. They can also take appliances that can be refurbished. https://www.svdp.us/lane-countys-best-nonprofit\n•Habitat for Humanity: Paint (in the original container with a secure lid) and reusable construction materials. https://www.florencehabitat.org\n•Lions Club of Florence: eyeglasses and hearing aids. https://e-clubhouse.org/sites/florence_siuslaw\n•Clearing out the pantry? EMAC will accept your non-perishable food items for Florence Food Share. https://florencefoodshare.org\n•Now has all that talk of clean-up around the house got you hungry? Support the INSPIRE Cooking School’s bake sale when you drop off your items. https://www.facebook.com/people/Inspire-Culinary-Academy/61574798513208\nSpeaking of Helping and Recycling\, do you have questions about the New Recycling Rules? EMAC will be at the community clean up event with educational materials and knowledge on RecycleOn\, the new Statewide Recycling Program. Find out more at the RecycleOn website: https://recycleon.org/Oregon\nSo\, not free but happening the same day and just down the street–The City of Florence Public Works will also be accepting Yard Debris AND selling FloGro at their location on 27th and Kingwood from 9 am until 2 pm.
