SUMMARY:Scotch Broom Removal at BLM’s 80-acre parcel on Trans Pacific Parkway – Saturday\, April 25
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Earth Day by volunteering with the Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative and Coos Watershed Association to remove invasive Scotch broom and European beach grass at the BLM’s 80-acre parcel on Trans Pacific Parkway on Saturday\, April 25 from 10 AM to Noon. We will be working on a moderate\, sandy slope about 1/10 of a mile from the road. Bring closed-toe shoes\, work gloves\, water\, and snacks. Please bring shovels or loppers if you have them. If you don’t\, ODRC will have tools you can borrow. The Scotch broom plants are generally small\, so this will be a good opportunity for families to work together helping out the Oregon dunes! \nAs you know\, the weather on the Oregon coast can be quite varied. One day it can be nice and sunny\, which we are hoping for on the 25th\, the next day it can be stormy. Dress for the weather! If it is sunny or misting\, we will be working\, if it is a storm\, we will cancel. We will make the best call that we can Friday afternoon\, the 24th. Check back at our webpage\, www.SaveOregonDunes.org/events/ or our Facebook page\, Save The Oregon Dunes\, for updates. \nDirections: \nFrom Florence\, Oregon\, take Hwy 101 south\, 45 miles. Turn right onto Trans Pacific Parkway and go approximately 1.75 miles (you will go past both Horsfall Beach Rd. and Jordan Cove Rd.) There is a turnout on the south side of the road next to the railroad tracks where you can park. If that area fills up\, there is a smaller turnout on the north side of the road. The shoulder of the road is wide in this area\, so there is additional parking on the shoulder if the turnouts fill up. If you would like to carpool and either need a ride or riders\, email info@saveoregondunes.org and we will work to line up carpooling for those interested. \nFrom North Bend\, Oregon\, take Hwy 101 north\, passing over the McCullough Memorial Bridge. Turn left onto Trans Pacific Parkway and go approximately 1.75 miles (you will go past both Horsfall Beach Rd. and Jordan Cove Rd.) There is a turnout on the south side of the road next to the railroad tracks where you can park. If that area fills up\, there is a smaller turnout on the north side of the road. The shoulder of the road is wide in this area\, so there is additional parking on the shoulder if the turnouts fill up. \nThe Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative’s mission is to collaboratively support\, guide and promote Oregon dunes restoration and the preservation of the open sand\, unique habitats\, and dunes processes that benefit the plants\, animals and people who live and play in this special place.

SUMMARY:Guided Educational Hike at Oregon Dunes Day Use Area – Saturday\, April 26
DESCRIPTION:McKenzie River Trust is hosting a “Connect with the Land Tour” on Saturday\, April 26 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area. Registration is required and space is limited. Use this link to register: https://give.mckenzieriver.org/…/secrets-of-the…/e673319. \nThe Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is one of the largest expanses of temperate coastal sand dunes in the world. Join us for a guided hike with members of the Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative (ODRC) to learn about hte history and geology of this special place. ODRC members Dina Pavlis (dunes enthusiast and author) and Armand Rebischke (Restoration Botanist\, Siuslaw National Forest) will take us through the forest and across open sand\, sharing about the history and geology of the Oregon dunes. Dina and Armand will discuss how the dunes formed\, the importance of the open sand habitat\, why open sand is disappearing\, and the efforts in place to try to save it. Additionally\, you will explore a ghost forest\, learn about the native plants and animals that call the dunes “home\,” and discover the important benefits of the open sand habitat. \nThis hike will traverse sand that may be soft in some locations.
