The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Florence United Methodist Church but will also be available online for those unable to attend in person.\nErika Leonard is the community education director for KidPower International\, of which PridePower\, an adult/teen safety program and sponsor of the program\, is a subsidiary. The live online workshop will cover topics like staying calm and confident when you don’t feel like it and preventing\, avoiding or de-escalating dangerous situations. The program also covers setting and protecting personal boundaries and managing emotional triggers to think clearly. The program hopes to help participants to stay emotionally safe in the face of rude\, thoughtless\, threatening or offensive comments.\nTo join online\, email pflagflo@gmail.com to get an electronic link to the program. DESCRIPTION:PFLAG to show award-winning documentary\nPFLAG Florence invites the public to view “Heightened Scrutiny\,” a Sundance award-winning documentary on January 12\, at 6 p.m. at Florence United Methodist Church. The film follows an American Civil Liberties Union attorney as he represents trans youth\, their families and a doctor who filed suit against the Tennessee law that prohibits certain medical care for minors – chiefly puberty blockers and hormone therapy – arguing that the restrictions are discriminatory on the basis of sex and transgender status. The attorney became the first openly trans person to argue in front of the Supreme Court during oral arguments last December in U.S. v. Skrmetti. The film’s director is Sam Feder\, whose award-winning documentary “Disclosure\,” which evaluated how trans people are depicted in film and television\, was shown by PFLAG Florence in 2022.\nThe event is free and open to the public. Its supporters have marched in the Rhody Parade for a dozen years\, in the Yachats La-de-da Parade with PFLAG-Oregon Central Coast of Newport for six years\, and in the Florence Pride proclamation at City Hall for two years. It is hoping to participate with a booth at the Florence Farmer’s Market this summer\, and was invited to table at the Oregon Bach Festival premiere of “Considering Matthew Shephard” at the Hult Center in Eugene June 28.

The church is located on the corner of Kingwood and Second Street\, one block west of Hwy 101. \nThe 80-minute documentary\, released in 2014\, deals with the tragic history of Alan Turing\, one of the 20th century’s most important mathematicians\, now considered the father of computer science. His unconventional and original mind helped the British break the German naval Enigma code during World War II\, but rather than being hailed for this triumph\, he was persecuted and tried under England’s anti-gay laws. To avoid prison\, he had to undergo what was then called “chemical castration\,” a process that ultimately led to his suicide at the age of 41. He has since received accolades and a public apology from the British government\, but his story remains one that needs to be told. \nPFLAG-Florence is an affiliate of a national organization with more than 350 chapters and 200\,000 members and supporters across the United States. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Florence United Methodist Church\, located on the corner of Kingwood and Second\, one block west of Highway 101. \nThe Western Lane Crisis Response team (WLCR) responds to the scene of various emergencies in the greater Florence community\, including upriver in Mapleton and Swisshome-Deadwood\, offering support and guidance to community members who find themselves faced with unexpected traumatic situations or mental health crises. They offer emotional support\, assessment\, community resources\, and follow-up to help people in through difficult times. Staff are on call 24 hours a day through the 911 system dispatcher. WLCR also makes helpful literature available at no cost from www.wlfea.org/mobile-crisis-response. \nConsider bringing a friend to the meeting. PFLAG will honor one of its founding members\, Ray Feay\, a longtime Florence resident who was instrumental in establishing the PFLAG affiliate in Florence.  \nFollowing the presentation\, attendees are invited to a PFLAG-hosted reception in the Fellowship Hall of Florence United Methodist Church\, 2nd and Kingwood. PFLAG will provide attendees with leis\, signs and Pride Flags for the celebration.
